BREAST AUGMENTATION

Breast Augmentation, or breast enlargement, is a popular surgical procedure today in New York and throughout the country. Women choose Breast Augmentation for so many reasons, including lost volume, change in breast shape after children, small breasts aiding in asymmetric body size proportions, and regardless of symptom, we choose augmentation to feel more self-confident in our appearance.
Breast Augmentation involves a sterile implant, either saline or silicone gel, that enlarges, enhances, and restores volume in your breasts. This procedure may be ideal for you, or you may desire an outcome that requires a combination of a Breast Augmentation and Breast Lift.

The more we can educate you on Breast Augmentation and Breast Procedures available, the better we can work together to select the appropriate procedure to meet your expectations. What is the cost of Breast Augmentation at Medical First New York?
The price of Breast Augmentation is determined by the procedural needs of each patient. It involves the cost of the implant(s), which vary, the surgeon fee, anesthesia and surgical suite. During our consultation with you, we will provide you with a specific procedure fee.

How long does Breast Augmentation last?
This is a good question and is common asked during consultation. Many patients want to discuss the option of saline and silicone implants and the maintenance of them. It is best to determine that at some point following any breast augmentation, there is reason to anticipate a future procedure. This future procedure may include removing or exchanging the implants, and may also include a lift at a later time.

Breast Augmentation Q & A
How is the procedure done?

Medications are administered for your comfort during breast augmentation surgery. The choices include intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. Dr. Olivier will recommend the best choice for you. Incisions are made in inconspicuous areas to minimize visible scarring. Incision options include: inframammary, periareolar, transaxillary.

Implant type and size will be determined not just on your desired increase in size but more importantly on your breast anatomy, skin elasticity and body type. Saline breast implants are filled with sterile salt water. They can be filled with varying amounts of saline which can affect the shape, firmness and feel of the breast. Should the implant shell leak, a saline breast implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body. Silicone breast implants are filled with an elastic gel. The gel feels and moves much like natural breast tissue. If the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant shell, or may escape into the breast implant pocket. A leaking implant filled with silicone gel may not collapse. If you choose these implants, you may need to visit your plastic surgeon regularly to make sure the implants are functioning properly. An ultrasound or MRI screening can assess the condition of breast implants. Implant manufacturers occasionally introduce new styles and types of implants, so there may be additional options available. Currently Saline breast implants are FDA-approved for augmentation in women 18 years of age and older. Currently Silicone breast implants are FDA-approved for augmentation in women 22 years of age and older.

After the incision is made, a breast implant is inserted into a pocket either under the pectoral muscle (a submuscular placement), or directly behind the breast tissue, over the pectoral muscle (a submammary/ subglandular placement). The method for inserting and positioning implants depends on the type of implant, degree of enlargement desired, your body type, and your surgeon’s recommendations.

What is the recovery time?
Following Breast Augmentation surgery, you will be provided a support garment to wear home and continue wearing for several days. Many patients feel surprisingly well immediately following the procedure, however report increasing soreness the first evening and for the next few days following. We provide you prescription pain medication to aid you through the first days. Post surgical instructions will be discussed and sent home with you. Follow- up appointments will be scheduled before you leave Medical First New York the day of surgery to be certain we assess your progress carefully. The healing process continues for several weeks although many normal activities resume quickly.
